Update: The Self-Determination Program is a Game Changer!
We’re officially one month into the California Regional Center’s Self-Determination program, and I can’t express how life-changing it has been for our family. As of December 1st, 2024, my daughter is fully up and running in the program, and it has completely transformed the way we support her. For the first time, we’ve been able to create an environment that feels truly fulfilling and tailored to her unique needs.
Through Self-Determination, we’ve gained the freedom to choose the people and services that align perfectly with her strengths and goals. From personal assistants to respite workers, coaches, and tutors, we’ve built a team that’s not only supportive but also deeply invested in her success. These individuals have already become such important parts of our lives, and it’s incredible to see how they are helping her grow into the person she is meant to be.
While we were always grateful for the services available through the Regional Center’s traditional model, there’s something so empowering about finding the right fits ourselves. Instead of trying to adapt to what was available, we’ve been able to design a support system that works for her. It’s a game-changer, and I feel so much more hopeful about her future now that we have this flexibility.
I can already see how this is helping her build confidence and skills in ways we hadn’t imagined. Whether it’s learning new life skills, exploring her interests, or simply feeling supported and understood, this program has opened up possibilities we wouldn’t have dreamed of a year ago. It’s incredible to think about how far we’ve come in just one month, and I can’t wait to see what the future holds for her.
If you’re part of the Self-Determination program too, I’d love to hear about your experience! How is it going for you? Are you finding the same sense of empowerment and fulfillment that we are? Let’s keep sharing our journeys and celebrating the progress together.
